We had a really nice Christmas. The most exciting part was getting to meet our newest family member, Katherine. We marveled at David and Anna's laid back attitude as their 2-week old baby was passed around from adoring family member to the next - and the line to get to hold baby Katherine was LONG. All of Anna's 9 brothers and sisters were on hand and soooo excited to meet the first grandbaby on her side of the family. Baby Katherine took it all in stride and slept with her mouth wide open through it all. She must take after her Aunt Ellen in that regard! : )
Addie was also introduced to several of her extended family members. She handled all of the new faces in stride and met everyone with smiles (most of the time!). I think that was the sweetest part of Christmas was seeing my cousins, aunts and uncles meet our little daughter. Such precious memories.
We started celebrating "Joanna's side of the family" Christmas when we had my mom over for her birthday on the 20th. Dennis cooked up some yummy dinner. Then we opened gifts. My mom should be a professional gift wrapper. All of the packages are so beautiful you almost hate to open the gifts - almost!
On the 22nd we headed to Cozad where all of Dad's brothers and sisters were meeting for a get together at my Myrna's house in Gothenburg. It's a rare event to get them all together since they are scattered from Texas, Georgia and until recently, the Philippines. We ate our traditional Christmas meal of oyster stew (Joanna - "yummy!") and Chicken noodle soup (Dennis - "thank God there's an alternative to they oyster stew!"). We then watched old 8mm movies from when Dad was a kid. It was amazing how uncle Donnie could name the year and make of every car and Dad could recount what stretch of highway between Texas and Nebraska the film was showing.
Several cousins were there as well. I hadn't seen most of them since Ellen's funeral, so it was nice to see them under different circumstances. It was pretty cool to watch our kids playing together like we all used to when we were little. I just wish we all lived closer.
On Friday I invited a few of my high school classmates who were back in town over for a short get together. Misty and Pete were in from S
eattle. We got to meet their sweet baby boy, Grant. You can learn all about him here. http://thedampiers.blogspot.com/. Michele and Scott and their two year old, Bailey, were in from Denver. They are expecting their second child this spring! And Darby was in from Virginia. Wendy, his wife, wasn't flying in until later, so we missed getting to see her again. It was fun to see everyone, most who I hadn't seen since our 10 year high school class reunion. This was a much more subdued get together. Pete was relieved that no one was pressuring him to play "quarters" and we were all relieved that no one had taken off their pants and ran around the house. (don't ask!) Our visit was much too short.
On Christmas day we were able to hang out some more with cousins. Addie was able to meet her second cousin Evelyn who is two months younger. It was so fun to have all these little girls all together!
Speaking of little girls . . . Chris and Melissa had their baby girl! Victoria Grace was born yesterday around 2PM. Everyone is doing well. I'll post photos as soon as I have some!!
